About

Janet McGhee

Founding Artistic Director

One of the Capital District’s most respected choral conductors, Janet has led the Battenkill Chorale for twenty-three years, most recently performing Verdi’s Requiem at Skidmore’s Zankel Music Center to sold-out houses and critical acclaim. She has prepared choirs for Seiji Ozawa and Peter Schickele, and performed at Carnegie Hall and Symphony Hall in Boston.

Ms. McGhee has taught music at Skidmore and Bennington Colleges, and toured choirs throughout Europe and the former Soviet Union. Janet McGhee and the Battenkill Chorale epitomize Hubbard Hall’s artistic reach in the region, inspiring over one hundred unauditioned voices to gather and rehearse in the Hall each week to create unparalleled choral performances for very appreciative audiences.

The Chorale

Since 1995

The Battenkill Chorale, in Cambridge, NY, is a 100+ voice un-auditioned chorus from six counties in New York and Vermont. Founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Janet McGhee, we are an eclectic and dedicated group of amateur singers that has become one of the “cultural crown jewels” of the North Country and the Capital Regions.

•

We perform major works from the choral music literature extending from intimate chamber pieces to larger scale dramatic works for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Our richly-varied and critically-acclaimed repertoire includes both sacred and secular music from the 15th to 20th centuries, all sung in the original language.

We invite you to join us for upcoming seasons of music making!

Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings September through May at Hubbard Hall, an 1878 rural opera house in Cambridge, NY.

We are a unique group of spirited individuals united by a love of singing. We work very hard in rehearsal as we strive to bring a composer’s genius to life. And, we are ever so much more than a chorus. We are a family, sharing the full range of human experience. We revel in our uniqueness, respect our individuality, treasure our friendships, and enjoy making music together.

Members pay a membership fee each concert season, plus the cost of music.
